A plotter is a computer hardware device similar to a printer, but it’s used for printing vector graphics. Unlike traditional printers that use dots, plotters employ a pen, pencil, marker, or other writing tool to create continuous lines on paper or flat surfaces. They’re commonly used for producing high-quality schematics, diagrams, and large-format images. In the past, plotters were faster and produced higher-quality line drawings than conventional printers, but they’ve largely been replaced by wide-format inkjet printers and LED toner-based printers. Cutting plotters, which use a knife to cut materials like vinyl or leather, remain in use in certain industries.
